When a tooth is severely compromised, a standard filling simply isn't enough to save it. Whether it is due to advanced decay, a deep crack, or a recent root canal, your tooth needs comprehensive protection to function properly again. At Moreno Beach Dental, we provide that essential protection without sacrificing the aesthetics of your smile.

Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our expert restorative team specialize in crafting custom porcelain crowns that look, feel, and function exactly like natural teeth. We proudly provide these durable, life-changing restorations to patients throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace, helping our community eat, speak, and smile with total confidence.

What is a Porcelain Dental Crown?

A dental crown is essentially a custom-made "cap" that completely encases the visible portion of a weakened or damaged tooth. By covering the entire tooth structure above the gumline, the crown restores the tooth's original shape, size, and strength while firmly sealing out harmful bacteria.

We exclusively use high-quality porcelain for our crowns because it closely mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural dental enamel. This ensures your restored tooth blends seamlessly with the rest of your smile, completely avoiding the dark lines at the gum margin that older metal-based crowns often leave behind.

Signs You Might Need a Dental Crown

Dr. Park may recommend a custom porcelain crown to save your tooth if you have experienced any of the following:

  • Severe Decay: A cavity that has grown too large to be safely or effectively repaired with a standard composite filling.
  • A Cracked or Broken Tooth: A crown holds a fractured tooth together, preventing it from splitting further and requiring an extraction.
  • Post-Root Canal Therapy: Teeth naturally become brittle after a root canal infection is cleared out. A crown restores their structural integrity so you can chew safely.
  • A Worn-Down Bite: Severe teeth grinding (bruxism) or chronic acid erosion can wear teeth down to vulnerable stumps, requiring crowns to rebuild your natural bite.
  • Cosmetic Imperfections: A crown can be used to beautifully cover a severely misshapen or deeply discolored tooth that does not respond to professional whitening.

The Modern, Comfortable Crown Process

Getting a custom porcelain crown is a smooth, highly precise process. Thanks to our advanced digital technology, we ensure your absolute comfort at every step:

  • Preparation: First, we gently numb the area with a local anesthetic so you won't feel any pain. Dr. Park then carefully removes the decay and slightly reshapes the tooth enamel so the new crown will fit perfectly over it.
  • Digital Impressions: Say goodbye to messy, gag-inducing impression putty! We use our iTero Digital Scanner to capture a highly accurate, 3D digital model of your bite in just a few minutes.
  • Temporary Crown: While our trusted, high-tier dental laboratory crafts your permanent porcelain crown, we will place a durable temporary crown to protect your tooth and keep you smiling.
  • Final Placement: Once your custom crown is ready (usually in about two weeks), you will return to our office. Dr. Park will check the fit, make any necessary micro-adjustments to ensure your bite is perfectly aligned, and permanently bond the beautiful new crown into place.

How long does a porcelain crown last?
With excellent oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, a high-quality porcelain crown can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, or even longer. Avoiding hard habits like chewing on ice, biting your fingernails, or using your teeth to open packages will help extend its lifespan.
Will my new crown look noticeable?
Not at all! Modern porcelain is highly customizable. Dr. Park will carefully color-match the ceramic material to the exact shade, translucency, and texture of your adjacent teeth. Once it is placed, even you might have trouble telling which tooth is the crown.
Does getting a dental crown hurt?
Your comfort is our top priority. We use local anesthesia to completely numb the tooth and surrounding gums before any preparation begins. You might feel some minor sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days after the procedure, but it is generally very mild and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How do I care for my new dental crown?
You care for a porcelain crown exactly the same way you care for a natural tooth! Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss daily (making sure to slide the floss out horizontally rather than snapping it up against the crown), and visit Moreno Beach Dental every six months for routine cleanings and exams.
