When you have a cavity or tooth fracture, finding the right treatment is all about balance. If the damage is too extensive for a standard composite filling to securely hold, but the tooth is still healthy enough that it doesn't need to be completely shaved down for a full dental crown, what is the best solution?

At Moreno Beach Dental, the answer is often a custom porcelain inlay or onlay. Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our dedicated clinical team believe in practicing conservative dentistry—meaning we strive to save as much of your natural, healthy tooth structure as possible. We proudly provide these durable, highly aesthetic "partial crowns" to patients throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom-milled, indirect restorations used to repair the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars). Unlike a standard filling that is molded directly inside your mouth during your visit, inlays and onlays are crafted in a high-tier dental laboratory from solid, medical-grade porcelain and then permanently bonded to your tooth.

Onlays and Inlays

  • Porcelain Inlay: An inlay is used when the damage is located strictly within the deep grooves and crevices of the tooth, sitting entirely inside the outer cusps (the raised bumps on the chewing surface).
  • Porcelain Onlay: An onlay is slightly larger. It is used when the decay or fracture extends over one or more of the tooth's cusps. Because it covers a larger area, it is frequently referred to as a "partial crown."

The Benefits of a Conservative Approach

Choosing a porcelain inlay or onlay offers several incredible benefits for both the health and aesthetics of your smile:

  • Maximum Tooth Preservation: A full crown requires removing a significant amount of enamel around the entire 360-degree perimeter of the tooth. An inlay or onlay only replaces the exact portion that is damaged, leaving your surrounding healthy enamel completely intact.
  • Superior Strength: Large composite fillings can weaken a tooth over time, but bonding a solid piece of custom-milled porcelain directly to the enamel actually increases the structural integrity and weight-bearing capability of the tooth.
  • Flawless Aesthetics: We use high-quality porcelain that perfectly mimics the translucency and texture of your natural enamel. Once bonded, the restoration is virtually invisible.
  • Exceptional Longevity: Because porcelain does not expand and contract with temperature changes the way older metal fillings do, inlays and onlays provide an incredibly stable, long-lasting seal against future bacteria.

The Custom Restoration Process

Getting an inlay or onlay is very similar to the process of getting a dental crown, ensuring your complete comfort and precision at every step.

First, we will gently numb the area to ensure you feel absolutely no pain. Dr. Park will carefully clear away the decay and clean the remaining healthy tooth structure. Next, we skip the messy impression putty and use our iTero Digital Scanner to capture a fast, flawless 3D model of your bite.

While our master laboratory crafts your custom porcelain restoration, we will place a durable temporary filling to protect your tooth. In a couple of weeks, you will return to our Moreno Valley dentist office so Dr. Park can seamlessly bond the final inlay or onlay into place, carefully checking your bite for perfect alignment.

Does getting an inlay or onlay hurt?
Not at all. Your comfort is our top priority. We use highly effective local anesthesia to completely numb the tooth and the surrounding gums before we begin removing any decay. You might feel a little vibration during the preparation, but you will not feel any pain.
How long do porcelain inlays and onlays last?
Because they are crafted from highly durable dental porcelain and securely bonded to the tooth, inlays and onlays are incredibly long-lasting. With excellent daily brushing, flossing, and regular professional checkups, they can easily last 10 to 15 years, and often much longer.
What is the difference between an onlay and a dental crown?
The main difference is how much of the natural tooth is covered. A dental crown is a "cap" that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth right down to the gumline. An onlay only covers the top chewing surface and the specific cusps that were damaged, making it a much more conservative option that saves your healthy enamel.
Will people be able to see my inlay or onlay when I laugh?
No! We exclusively use tooth-colored ceramic materials for these restorations. Dr. Park will carefully color-match the porcelain to the exact shade of your surrounding teeth, so the transition between your natural enamel and the restoration is completely seamless.
