For many young adults, finding out it is time to have their wisdom teeth removed feels like an intimidating rite of passage. If you or your teenager are experiencing jaw pain, or if your dentist has recommended extraction, it is completely normal to feel a bit of anxiety.

At Moreno Beach Dental, we want to reassure you that this is an incredibly routine and straightforward procedure. Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our compassionate clinical team utilize advanced digital imaging and gentle surgical techniques to ensure your wisdom teeth removal is as smooth, safe, and comfortable as possible. We are proud to provide expert, stress-free oral surgery to patients throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.

What Are Wisdom Teeth and Why Are They a Problem?

Wisdom teeth, officially known as your "third molars," are the very last set of teeth to develop and erupt, typically making their appearance between the ages of 17 and 25.

Thousands of years ago, human diets required these extra molars for grinding tough, raw foods. However, as our diets evolved, human jawbones gradually became smaller. Today, the vast majority of people simply do not have enough physical space in the back of their mouths to accommodate four additional large teeth.

Because of this lack of space, wisdom teeth often become impacted. This means they remain fully or partially trapped beneath the gumline or jawbone. They may grow sideways, push aggressively against your adjacent healthy teeth, or only partially erupt, creating deep, impossible-to-clean pockets where dangerous bacterial infections can thrive.

Signs It Might Be Time for an Evaluation

While we prefer to monitor wisdom teeth development early and remove them before they cause symptoms, you should contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following warning signs:

  • Persistent, throbbing pain or stiffness in the back of the jaw.
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums behind your last visible molars.
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully or pain when chewing.
  • A bad taste in your mouth or chronic bad breath (signs of a hidden infection).
  • Noticeable shifting or crowding of your other teeth.

A Focus on Your Ultimate Comfort

We know that the idea of oral surgery can be nerve-wracking, which is why your comfort dictates every step of our process.

Before we recommend extraction, Dr. Park uses advanced 3D digital imaging to map out the exact size, position, and root structure of your wisdom teeth, as well as their proximity to your nerves. This allows for meticulous surgical planning.

On the day of your procedure, we use highly effective local anesthesia to completely numb the area. While you may feel some slight pressure as the tooth is gently loosened, you will not feel any sharp pain during the extraction. We will walk you through exactly what to expect, work efficiently to minimize your time in the chair, and provide comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure a rapid, comfortable recovery at home.

Does everyone need to get their wisdom teeth removed?
No, not everyone! If your jaw is large enough to accommodate them, and your wisdom teeth come in perfectly straight, healthy, and are easy to clean with a toothbrush, you can absolutely keep them. Dr. Park will evaluate your specific anatomy during a routine exam to determine if extraction is necessary.
When is the best time to have wisdom teeth extracted?
The ideal time for removal is usually during the late teenage years or early twenties. At this age, the roots of the wisdom teeth are not fully formed, and the surrounding jawbone is less dense, making the extraction significantly easier and the recovery much faster.
Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?
During the procedure itself, you will be completely numb and will not feel any pain. After the numbing wears off, it is normal to experience some swelling, stiffness, and mild to moderate soreness for a few days. We will provide you with specific pain management protocols, which usually include over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen, to keep you comfortable while you heal.
What can I eat after my wisdom teeth are removed?
For the first few days, you will need to stick to a strict soft-food diet. Excellent options include yogurt, applesauce, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, lukewarm broths, and smoothies. You must strictly avoid anything hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy. Crucially, you must not drink through a straw for at least a week, as the suction can dislodge the healing blood clot and cause a painful condition known as "dry socket."
