Gentle Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Moreno Valley

Does the sound of a dental drill make your palms sweat? Do you have a sensitive gag reflex that makes even routine cleanings feel incredibly uncomfortable? If so, you are not alone. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, but it should never be the reason you avoid getting the essential oral healthcare you need and deserve.
At Moreno Beach Dental, we want to change the way you feel about the dentist. Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our compassionate clinical team offer nitrous oxide—commonly known as "laughing gas"—as a highly effective, gentle way to take the edge off and help you relax in the chair. We are proud to provide this safe, stress-reducing sedation option to children and adults throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.
During your appointment, we will place a small, comfortable mask over your nose. As you breathe normally, the nitrous oxide is mixed with pure oxygen. Within just a few minutes, you will begin to feel a deep sense of calm wash over you. Many patients describe feeling a light, floating sensation, or a warm tingling in their arms and legs.
Despite the nickname "laughing gas," it doesn't necessarily make you laugh out loud; rather, it simply induces a happy, carefree, and euphoric state where the sights and sounds of the dental office no longer bother you.

What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, slightly sweet-smelling gas that has been safely used in dentistry for decades. It is considered a mild, conscious sedative.During your appointment, we will place a small, comfortable mask over your nose. As you breathe normally, the nitrous oxide is mixed with pure oxygen. The Benefits of Choosing Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide is our most popular sedation option for both routine cleanings and complex procedures because it offers several incredible benefits:- You Remain Fully Awake: You will not be put to sleep. You will remain fully conscious, able to breathe on your own, and able to easily communicate with Dr. Park and our team throughout the entire procedure.
- Highly Adjustable: Because the gas is administered continuously, Dr. Park can easily adjust the level of sedation from minute to minute to ensure you are always perfectly comfortable.
- Calms the Gag Reflex: If you struggle with a severe gag reflex, nitrous oxide acts as a natural suppressant, making it much easier to tolerate dental impressions or having hands in your mouth.
- Rapid Recovery: This is the only form of dental sedation where you can safely drive yourself home! Once your procedure is over, we simply flush the nitrous oxide out of your system with 100% pure oxygen. Within 3 to 5 minutes, the effects completely wear off, leaving no grogginess behind.

FAQs

Does nitrous oxide replace numbing shots?
No, it does not. Nitrous oxide is an anxiolytic, meaning it relieves anxiety and slightly dulls pain perception, but it is not a local anesthetic. We will still need to numb your tooth before a procedure like a filling or extraction. However, because the laughing gas relaxes you so deeply beforehand, most patients find they don't even mind or barely notice the numbing injection!
Is laughing gas safe for children?
Yes, absolutely! Nitrous oxide is highly recommended by pediatric dentists as an incredibly safe and effective way to help nervous children or those with special needs sit still and feel comfortable during their dental treatments.
Can I drive myself back to work after my appointment?
Yes! Because the sedative effects of nitrous oxide leave your body almost immediately once we switch your mask to pure oxygen, you will be completely clear-headed before you even leave the dental chair. You can safely drive yourself home, go back to work, or return to school without any lingering drowsiness.
Can anyone get nitrous oxide sedation?
While laughing gas is safe for most people, it is not recommended for everyone. We will not administer nitrous oxide if you are pregnant (especially in the first trimester), if you have severe respiratory issues (like COPD), or if you currently have a stuffy nose or sinus infection that prevents you from breathing comfortably through your nose.
