Do you frequently wake up with a dull headache, a sore jaw, or teeth that feel unusually sensitive? You might be taking your stress out on your smile while you sleep. Chronic teeth grinding and jaw clenching—a condition known as bruxism—is incredibly common, but if left untreated, it can cause devastating damage to your teeth, gums, and jaw joints.

At Moreno Beach Dental, we want to help you sleep comfortably and wake up pain-free. Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our compassionate dental team provide highly effective, non-invasive treatments to absorb the intense pressure of grinding and protect your oral health. We are proud to offer customized bruxism relief to patients throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the unconscious act of tightly clenching your jaw or grinding your upper and lower teeth back and forth against each other. While it can happen during the day (often as a reaction to stress or deep concentration), "sleep bruxism" is the most common and destructive form because you have no conscious control over the immense force your jaw muscles are exerting.

Because it happens while you are asleep, many patients have no idea they suffer from bruxism until a partner complains about the grinding noise, or until Dr. Park notices the telltale signs of abnormal wear during a routine dental exam.

The Hidden Dangers to Your Gums and Teeth

Human jaw muscles are incredibly powerful. When you chew food, you exert a normal amount of force. When you grind your teeth at night, you can subject your smile to up to 250 pounds of continuous pressure!

This intense force doesn't just wear down your enamel. As a periodontal concern, chronic grinding puts immense stress on the foundational structures of your mouth. The extreme pressure causes the teeth to slightly flex at the gumline, which can lead to rapid gum recession and even cause the underlying jawbone to slowly deteriorate, resulting in loose teeth. Additionally, bruxism is a leading cause of cracked teeth, broken fillings, and painful Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders.

Custom Nightguards for Immediate Relief

The most effective, conservative way to treat sleep bruxism is with a custom-fitted occlusal guard, commonly known as a nightguard.

Instead of relying on bulky, uncomfortable "boil-and-bite" guards from the drugstore, Dr. Park uses our advanced iTero Digital Scanner to capture a precise, 3D model of your bite in minutes. Our dental laboratory uses this digital blueprint to craft a slim, highly durable acrylic guard that fits the exact contours of your teeth.

When you wear your custom nightguard to bed, it acts as a protective cushion. It prevents your upper and lower teeth from physically touching, absorbs the destructive forces of your jaw muscles, and allows your TMJ to fully relax and recover overnight.

How do I know if I grind my teeth in my sleep?
Because you are asleep when it happens, you have to look for the morning-after symptoms. Common signs include waking up with a dull, constant headache, a sore or tired jaw, neck pain, or sudden tooth sensitivity. Dr. Park can also diagnose bruxism by looking for flattened, chipped, or worn-down chewing surfaces during your dental exam.
Can bruxism really cause my gums to recede?
Yes. When you clench and grind, the immense pressure travels down the tooth and causes it to slightly bend or flex near the root. This constant flexing irritates the gum tissue, causing it to pull away (recede) from the tooth. Wearing a custom nightguard is one of the best ways to stop this specific type of gum recession.
Are store-bought nightguards just as good as custom ones?
No. Over-the-counter nightguards are mass-produced and rarely fit well. They are often bulky, making it difficult to breathe or sleep comfortably, and they frequently fall out during the night. Because they are made of soft, spongy material, they can actually trigger your jaw muscles to chew on them more, worsening your TMJ pain. A custom acrylic guard from Moreno Beach Dental is slim, secure, and designed to properly align your jaw.
Will a nightguard cure my bruxism?
A nightguard does not "cure" the subconscious muscle action of grinding, which is often linked to stress, sleep apnea, or genetics. However, it is a highly effective management tool. It completely stops the physical damage to your teeth and gums while drastically reducing muscle tension and jaw pain.
