Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Not sure if your situation counts as an emergency? As a general rule, if you are experiencing severe pain, bleeding that won't stop, or a loose permanent tooth, you need urgent care. We routinely treat the following emergencies:

  • Severe Toothaches: A relentless, throbbing ache is usually the sign of a deep bacterial infection inside the tooth pulp that requires immediate attention.
  • Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Teeth: Time is critical! If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, we have the best chance of saving it if we see you within 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Teeth: A deep fracture can expose the sensitive inner nerves of your tooth to the air and bacteria, causing intense pain.
  • Lost Crowns or Fillings: Losing a restoration leaves your weakened tooth exposed to damage and highly sensitive to temperature changes.
  • Dental Abscesses: A painful, pimple-like bump on the gums accompanied by facial swelling or a fever indicates a severe infection that can spread if left untreated.

What to Do Before You Arrive (First Aid)

While you are on your way to our Moreno Valley office, taking the right first-aid steps can help save your tooth and manage your pain:

  • For a Knocked-Out Tooth: Pick the tooth up only by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root. Gently rinse it with water if it's dirty, but do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it moist by placing it in a small container of milk or holding it inside your cheek until you reach us.
  • For Facial Swelling: Apply a cold compress or an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off.
  • For a Lost Crown: If you still have the crown, gently clean it and try to slip it back over the tooth using a dab of toothpaste or over-the-counter dental cement. Bring it with you to your appointment!

FAQs

Should I go to the emergency room or the dentist?
Most hospital ERs do not have a dentist on staff and are not legally equipped to pull teeth or perform root canals; they can usually only give you antibiotics and pain medication. You should come directly to Moreno Beach Dental for toothaches, broken teeth, or lost restorations. However, if you have a broken jaw, severe facial trauma, swelling that is making it difficult to breathe or swallow, or bleeding that will not stop after 15 minutes of continuous pressure, please go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately.
How can I stop a severe toothache at home?
First, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to clean the area. Use dental floss to gently remove any trapped food that might be irritating the gums. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever like Ibuprofen to manage the discomfort. Never put aspirin or painkillers directly against your gums, as this will cause a severe chemical burn.
Is a chipped tooth an emergency?
It depends on the severity. If it is just a tiny, cosmetic chip and you are not in any pain, it is not an immediate emergency, but you should still call us to schedule an appointment within a few days to get it smoothed out. If the break is large, very painful, or leaves a sharp edge cutting your tongue, it is an emergency and we need to see you right away.
Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?
Yes! We always leave time built into our daily schedule specifically to accommodate unexpected dental emergencies. If you call us during normal business hours experiencing severe pain or trauma, we will do everything in our power to see you that very same day.
