The Foundation of a Great At-Home Routine

Consistency and proper technique are the secrets to exceptional oral hygiene. To keep plaque and bacteria at bay, we recommend adhering to these essential daily habits:

  • Brush Twice a Day: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth for a full two minutes, morning and night. Angle the brush at 45 degrees toward the gumline to sweep away hidden plaque.
  • Floss Daily: Brushing only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. Flossing at least once a day is crucial to remove trapped food particles and bacteria from the tight spaces between your teeth, which is where most cavities and gum infections begin.
  • Clean Your Tongue: Bacteria love to hide on the textured surface of your tongue, leading to bad breath and plaque buildup. Use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush to gently clean your tongue daily.
  • Stay Hydrated and Eat Smart: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day naturally washes away food debris and dilutes cavity-causing acids. Limiting sugary, sticky, and highly acidic foods will also drastically reduce your risk of enamel erosion.

How often should I change my toothbrush?
You should replace your manual toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every three to four months. However, if the bristles start to look frayed or bent, you should replace it sooner. You should also grab a new toothbrush immediately after recovering from a cold or flu to avoid reinfection.
Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual one?
Both can effectively clean your teeth if used correctly, but electric toothbrushes are generally highly recommended. The rapid vibration or rotation of the bristles removes more plaque with less effort, and many models include built-in timers to ensure you brush for the full two minutes.
Do I really need to floss every single day?
Yes! Flossing is absolutely essential. Skipping floss leaves a significant amount of plaque between your teeth and under the gumline. Over time, this unremoved plaque hardens into tartar, leading to interdental cavities, bad breath, and periodontal (gum) disease.
What kind of toothpaste is best for me?
For the vast majority of patients, any ADA-accepted toothpaste that contains fluoride is a great choice. Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens your enamel. If you struggle with tooth sensitivity, a specialized desensitizing toothpaste can help. For patients with a high risk of decay, Dr. Park may prescribe a high-fluoride or pH-balancing toothpaste like CariFree.
