Baby's First Dental Visit in Moreno Valley

As a parent, you celebrate every milestone your baby reaches—their first smile, their first steps, and, of course, their very first tooth! While it might seem a bit early to start thinking about dental appointments, the foundation for a beautiful adult smile is actually built during infancy.
At Moreno Beach Dental, we know that a child's early experiences at the dentist shape how they view oral health for the rest of their lives. Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our compassionate pediatric team are dedicated to making your baby's first visit entirely stress-free, fun, and highly informative. We are thrilled to welcome the newest additions to families throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.
Bringing your baby in at age one is crucial for two main reasons:
We typically perform a "knee-to-knee" exam. You and Dr. Park will sit facing each other, and your baby will lay on your lap with their head resting comfortably on Dr. Park's lap. This keeps your little one feeling safe and secure while giving us a great view of their mouth.

Why Age One?
Both the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) strongly recommend that a child visits the dentist within six months of their first tooth erupting, or by their first birthday—whichever comes first.Bringing your baby in at age one is crucial for two main reasons:
- Prevention is Key: Even a single tiny baby tooth can develop a cavity. By seeing your child early, we can spot the very first signs of early childhood tooth decay (often caused by nighttime bottles) and intervene before it becomes painful.
- Building a "Dental Home": We want your child to grow up feeling safe and comfortable in the dental chair. By introducing them to the sights, sounds, and friendly faces of our office before they actually need any dental work, we drastically reduce the chances of them developing dental anxiety later in life.
What to Expect During the "Happy Visit"
You can think of the age one visit as a "well-baby" checkup for their mouth. Our primary goal isn't to do an intensive cleaning, but rather to establish trust and make sure everything is developing normally. We typically perform a "knee-to-knee" exam. You and Dr. Park will sit facing each other, and your baby will lay on your lap with their head resting comfortably on Dr. Park's lap. This keeps your little one feeling safe and secure while giving us a great view of their mouth.
During this quick, gentle exam, Dr. Park will:
- Check the erupted teeth for any signs of early decay.
- Examine their gums, jaw, and bite to ensure proper development.
- Look for any issues related to tongue-ties or lip-ties.
Empowering Parents with Education

FAQs

Does my baby really need to see a dentist if they only have one tooth?
Yes! As soon as a tooth appears, it is susceptible to decay. Establishing a relationship with a dentist at age one isn't just about looking at that single tooth; it's about evaluating their overall oral development, catching potential issues early, and helping you build a great home-care routine.
What if my baby cries during the appointment?
Please don't worry—crying is completely normal, expected, and nothing to be embarrassed about! Babies cry to communicate, especially when they are in a new environment. In fact, when a baby cries, their mouth is wide open, which actually gives Dr. Park a fantastic, quick view of their teeth and gums!
Are baby teeth really that important since they just fall out anyway?
Baby teeth are incredibly important! They act as essential placeholders, guiding the permanent adult teeth into their proper positions. They are also crucial for your child's speech development and their ability to chew nutritious foods properly. Furthermore, an untreated infection in a baby tooth can spread and permanently damage the developing adult tooth underneath it.
How do I clean my baby's mouth before they have teeth?
Even before the first tooth erupts, it is a great idea to keep the gums clean. After feedings, simply wrap a clean, damp, soft washcloth or a silicone finger brush around your index finger and gently wipe down your baby's gums. This removes bacteria and gets them used to the sensation of having their mouth cleaned.
