Why Traditional Braces Are Still a Top Choice
While clear aligners have become very popular, traditional metal braces remain the absolute gold standard in orthodontics for a reason. They are incredibly powerful and offer a level of precise control that removable aligners simply cannot match.Dr. Park frequently recommends traditional braces for teenagers because:
- They Handle Complex Cases: Braces are the most effective way to correct severe crowding, large gaps, impacted teeth, and complex bite issues (like severe overbites or underbites).
- They Are 100% Compliant: Unlike clear aligners, which must be worn for 22 hours a day and are easily lost in school cafeterias, traditional braces are permanently attached to the teeth. You never have to worry about your teen forgetting to put their braces back in!
- They Provide Predictable Results: Because the continuous, gentle pressure is actively managed by our dental team at every appointment, traditional braces offer highly predictable and reliable timelines.
Types of Braces

Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional Metal Braces are the most common type of braces, consisting of metal brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by archwires and elastics. They are highly effective for correcting a wide range of orthodontic issues.PROS | CONS |

FAQs

How long will my teenager need to wear braces?
Every smile is unique, so treatment times vary based on the complexity of your teen's alignment issues. On average, most teenagers wear traditional braces for anywhere from 12 to 24 months. Dr. Park will be able to provide a much more accurate timeline during your initial consultation.
What foods does my teen need to avoid while wearing braces?
To prevent breaking a bracket or bending a wire, your teen will need to temporarily avoid foods that are excessively hard, sticky, or chewy. This includes chewing gum, caramel, taffy, hard candies, popcorn, and whole apples or carrots (which should be cut into small, bite-sized pieces instead).
How does my teen brush and floss with braces on?
Excellent oral hygiene is critical during orthodontic treatment! Food and plaque can easily get trapped around the brackets, leading to permanent white stains or cavities. We will teach your teen how to use specialized tools—like floss threaders, interdental proxy brushes, and water flossers—to easily and effectively clean around their hardware.
Can my teen still play sports and musical instruments with braces?
Absolutely! However, if your teen plays a contact sport (like football, basketball, or martial arts), they must wear a specialized orthodontic mouthguard to protect their braces and the soft tissues of their mouth from impact. If they play a wind or brass instrument, there may be a short adjustment period of a week or two as their lips get used to the feel of the brackets, but it will not stop them from playing.
