What is a Custom Dental Bridge?

Just as the name implies, a dental bridge literally "bridges the gap" created by one or more consecutive missing teeth.

This custom-made prosthetic consists of a false tooth (or teeth) suspended between two dental crowns. These crowns are firmly anchored to the healthy natural teeth on either side of the empty space. Once bonded into place, the result is a strong, seamless restoration that looks, feels, and functions just like your original bite.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore a Missing Tooth

Leaving a gap in your smile can trigger a chain reaction of oral health problems. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth naturally want to drift and tilt into the empty space.

This shifting can severely misalign your bite, leading to TMJ (jaw) pain, uneven enamel wear, and an increased risk of gum disease in those hard-to-clean tilted areas. A custom dental bridge acts as a vital placeholder. It keeps your remaining teeth exactly where they belong while instantly restoring your chewing power and facial aesthetics.

The Comfortable Bridge Procedure

Getting a dental bridge is a straightforward process, typically completed in just two visits.

First, Dr. Park will use a gentle local anesthetic to make sure you are completely numb and comfortable. He then carefully prepares the two anchoring teeth by removing a small amount of enamel so the bridge's crowns can fit securely over them without looking bulky.

Next, we use our state-of-the-art iTero Digital Scanner to take a fast, goop-free 3D impression of your bite. While our master dental laboratory crafts your permanent porcelain bridge, we will place a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and keep you smiling. A couple of weeks later, you will return so Dr. Park can permanently bond your beautiful new restoration into place, meticulously checking your bite to ensure a flawless fit.

How long do dental bridges last?
With excellent oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, a high-quality porcelain dental bridge can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, or even longer. Your daily habits play a big role—avoiding chewing on ice, hard candies, or using your teeth as tools will significantly extend the life of your restoration.
Is a dental bridge better than a dental implant?
Both are excellent ways to replace missing teeth, but they serve different needs. An implant replaces the tooth root and doesn't require altering the adjacent teeth, but it involves a minor surgery and takes a few months to heal. A bridge is faster, less invasive, and is often the best choice if the teeth adjacent to the gap already need crowns for other reasons. Dr. Park will evaluate your specific situation and help you choose the best option.
Is it hard to eat with a dental bridge?
Actually, it makes eating much easier! Replacing a missing tooth redistributes the forces of your bite, making chewing far more comfortable. However, we do recommend cutting hard foods (like raw carrots or apples) into smaller pieces and avoiding extremely sticky foods (like caramel) that could pull on the bridge over time.
How do I clean my new dental bridge?
You will brush your bridge twice a day just like your natural teeth. However, flossing requires a slight adjustment. Because the false tooth is connected to the anchoring crowns, you cannot pop standard floss down from the top. We will show you how to use a floss threader, interdental brush, or a water flosser to easily clean underneath the false tooth to keep your gums healthy.
