When we brush and floss, most of us are entirely focused on keeping our teeth white and cavity-free. However, the health of your gums is actually just as important! Your gum tissue and underlying jawbone act as the foundation for your entire smile. When that foundation becomes infected, it can lead to serious oral health complications and eventual tooth loss.

At Moreno Beach Dental, we take a highly proactive approach to periodontal health. Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our dedicated hygiene team use advanced diagnostics to catch gum disease in its earliest, most treatable stages. We are committed to providing gentle, effective periodontal care to individuals and families throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace, ensuring your smile stays strong for a lifetime.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, clinically known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the tissues and bone that surround and support your teeth. It is incredibly common—in fact, nearly half of all adults over the age of 30 have some form of it.

It typically develops in two main stages:

  • Gingivitis: The earliest and mildest stage. Plaque buildup along the gumline irritates the tissue, causing it to become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. At this stage, the damage is completely reversible with professional cleanings and excellent home care.
  • Periodontitis: If gingivitis is left untreated, the bacteria travel deeper below the gumline. The infection causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, forming deep "pockets" of trapped bacteria. Over time, your body’s inflammatory response to the infection will actually begin to break down the jawbone and connective tissues holding your teeth in place.

Do I Have Gum Disease? Look for the Warning Signs

Because gum disease is often painless in its early stages, it is sometimes called a "silent" disease. However, your mouth will usually give you warning signs. You should schedule a periodontal evaluation if you notice any of the following:

  • Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.
  • Gum tissue that looks red, swollen, or feels tender to the touch.
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that won't go away.
  • Gums that appear to be pulling away or receding from your teeth, making your teeth look longer.
  • Teeth that feel loose or a noticeable change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.

Precision Treatment with OralDNA® Labs

OralDNA Labs
At Moreno Beach Dental, we don't believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach to fighting infection. Because gum disease is caused by specific types of bacteria, we need to know exactly what we are fighting to treat it effectively.

We proudly utilize OralDNA® Labs salivary diagnostics. With a quick, painless saliva sample, we can identify the exact strain and concentration of harmful bacteria living in your mouth. This state-of-the-art testing allows Dr. Park to create a highly personalized, targeted treatment plan—which may include specialized deep cleanings, localized antibiotics, or customized home-care routines—to attack your specific infection at its source.

Can gum disease be completely cured?
If caught in the very early stage (gingivitis), it is 100% reversible and can be completely cured. However, once it progresses to periodontitis and bone loss has occurred, the disease cannot be "cured," but it can be highly effectively managed. With professional deep cleanings and excellent daily hygiene, we can stop the infection from causing any further damage.
Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I floss?
No! Healthy gums should never bleed during routine brushing or flossing. While you might occasionally nick your gums if you floss too aggressively, consistent bleeding is the most common early warning sign of gingivitis. If you see pink in the sink, it is time to schedule a dental visit.
How does gum disease affect the rest of my body?
Your mouth is deeply connected to your systemic health. The bacteria that cause periodontal disease can easily enter your bloodstream through the infected gum tissue and travel throughout your body. Severe gum disease has been scientifically linked to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, and complications during pregnancy.
Is gum disease contagious?
Your comfort is always our priority! Standard treatments for gum disease, such as Scaling and Root Planing (a deep cleaning), are performed using localized anesthetics to numb the gums. You will not feel any pain during the procedure, though your gums may feel slightly tender for a day or two afterward as they begin to heal.
