There are few things more disruptive to your daily life than a severe, throbbing toothache. When an infection reaches the inner nerve of your tooth, the pain can make it impossible to eat, sleep, or focus. At Moreno Beach Dental, we want to get you out of pain as quickly as possible while preserving your natural smile.

Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our compassionate clinical team are highly experienced in performing gentle, stress-free root canal therapy. Despite the old rumors you may have heard, modern root canals do not cause pain—they are the treatment that finally relieves it! We are dedicated to providing fast, effective, and comfortable endodontic care to individuals and families throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Beneath the hard outer enamel and the dentin layer of your tooth lies the "pulp," a soft tissue containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, or a severe impact allows bacteria to breach the outer layers, this pulp can become painfully inflamed or infected.

Root Canals

A root canal is a conservative procedure designed to save the tooth from extraction. During the treatment, Dr. Park carefully removes the infected pulp, thoroughly cleans and sanitizes the inner root canals, and then fills the space with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This seals the tooth to prevent future infection, completely eliminating your pain while allowing you to keep your natural tooth structure intact.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

Not all internal tooth infections present with symptoms right away, which is why regular checkups are so important. However, you should contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following warning signs:

  • Severe, Throbbing Pain: A persistent toothache that worsens when you bite down or apply pressure.
  • Extreme Temperature Sensitivity: A lingering, sharp pain from hot or cold foods and drinks that lasts long after the source is removed.
  • Swollen, Tender Gums: Noticeable swelling or tenderness in the gums near the painful tooth.
  • A "Pimple" on the Gums: A small, recurring bump (an abscess) on the gums that may ooze pus or leave a bad taste in your mouth.
  • Tooth Discoloration: A tooth that suddenly turns a darker, grayish-black color from the inside out.

A Focus on Your Ultimate Comfort

We understand that hearing the words "root canal" can cause anxiety. Please rest assured that your comfort is our highest priority.

Thanks to our advanced technology and Dr. Park’s gentle touch, a modern root canal is very similar to getting a routine dental filling. We use highly effective local anesthesia to ensure the entire area is completely numb before we begin. Most of our patients report feeling instant relief from their prior toothache as soon as the area is numbed!

Does getting a root canal hurt?
No! This is the most common misconception about the procedure. The infection inside the tooth is what causes the intense pain. The root canal procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, meaning you won't feel anything during the treatment. The goal of a root canal is to get you out of pain, not cause it.
How long does the root canal procedure take?
Depending on which tooth is infected and how complex the root canals are, the procedure typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. In most cases, we can complete the treatment in a single visit, though some severe infections may require two appointments to ensure the tooth is perfectly sanitized.
Will I need a dental crown after my root canal?
Yes, in almost all cases involving back teeth (molars and premolars). Once the blood supply (the pulp) is removed from the inside of the tooth, the remaining enamel naturally becomes more brittle over time. Placing a custom porcelain crown over the treated tooth restores its strength and protects it from fracturing when you chew.
Can't I just have the infected tooth pulled instead?
While tooth extraction is an option, saving your natural tooth should always be the first choice. Extracting a tooth leaves a gap that can cause your surrounding teeth to shift, altering your bite and leading to bone loss in your jaw. Replacing an extracted tooth with an implant or bridge is also significantly more expensive and time-consuming than a simple root canal.
