At Moreno Beach Dental, our primary goal is always to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime. We exhaust every possible conservative option—like root canal therapy or dental crowns—before we ever consider removing a tooth. However, there are times when a tooth is simply too damaged or infected to be saved. When keeping a tooth puts your surrounding teeth and your overall health at risk, a professional extraction is the safest and most effective way to get you out of pain.

Dr. Myung Kee Park, FAGD, and our compassionate clinical team understand that the idea of getting a tooth pulled can be anxiety-inducing. We are dedicated to providing gentle, highly precise surgical care that prioritizes your comfort from the moment you sit in the chair to the days following your procedure. We proudly provide this essential, relief-bringing service to patients throughout Moreno Valley, Riverside, Perris, Beaumont, Redlands, Loma Linda, and Grand Terrace.

When is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

While removing a tooth is usually our last resort, it is sometimes the absolute best thing we can do for your oral health. Dr. Park may recommend a gentle extraction if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Severe Tooth Decay: A cavity that has grown so large that it has destroyed the structural integrity of the tooth, making it impossible to support a filling or a crown.
  • Advanced Periodontal Disease: Severe gum disease can erode the jawbone and connective tissues that hold your teeth in place, causing the tooth to become painfully loose.
  • Irreparable Trauma: A tooth that has been deeply fractured or broken below the gumline due to a sports injury, an accident, or biting down on something hard.
  • Orthodontic Correction: In some cases, a tooth may need to be removed to alleviate severe crowding and make room for orthodontic treatments (like braces or clear aligners) to properly align your smile.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

We want to completely change the way you think about tooth extractions. Thanks to modern dental techniques and our team’s gentle touch, the process is incredibly fast and comfortable.

Before we begin, we use a highly effective local anesthetic to completely numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. During the procedure, you will feel some pressure and perhaps a slight wiggling sensation, but you should feel absolutely no sharp pain.

Using specialized instruments, Dr. Park will carefully and gently elevate the tooth out of its socket. The entire process is often completed in just a matter of minutes! Afterward, we will clean the area, place some sterile gauze to help a healthy blood clot form, and provide you with clear, easy-to-follow aftercare instructions.

Planning for the Future of Your Smile

Unless the extracted tooth was a wisdom tooth or removed for orthodontic crowding, pulling a tooth leaves a gap that needs to be addressed. Leaving an empty space can cause your remaining teeth to shift out of alignment, leading to bite issues and bone loss. Before you even leave our office, Dr. Park will discuss the best restorative options to replace your missing tooth—such as a custom dental bridge, a partial denture, or a dental implant—so you can quickly regain a complete, beautiful smile.

Does getting a tooth pulled hurt?
No. This is the biggest fear most patients have, but modern extractions are not painful! Because we use strong local anesthesia, the nerves in the area are completely blocked. You will only feel pressure, not pain. After the numbing wears off at home, it is normal to experience some mild soreness and swelling, which is usually very easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen.
How long does it take to heal from a tooth extraction?
The initial healing phase takes about one to two weeks. During the first few days, a blood clot will form in the socket, and the swelling will gradually subside. While the surface gums heal relatively quickly, the underlying jawbone can take several months to fully fill in the empty space.
What is a "dry socket" and how do I prevent it?
A dry socket is a painful condition that occurs if the protective blood clot in the extraction site is accidentally dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. To prevent this, you must avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, forcefully spitting, or aggressively rinsing your mouth for at least 3 to 5 days following your extraction.
Will I need to take time off from work or school?
For a standard, simple tooth extraction, most patients feel completely fine to return to work or school the very next day! If you have a more complex surgical extraction (or if you have multiple teeth removed at once), you may want to take 48 hours to rest and ice your jaw. We recommend avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least three to four days.
